A train collision in Odisha state of eastern India has resulted in the deaths of at least 261 people, with approximately 1,000 individuals sustaining injuries. The incident occurred when a passenger train derailed onto an adjacent track and was subsequently struck by another incoming train, which also collided with a stationary freight train in the vicinity.

Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway, involving a large number of emergency workers searching through the wreckage. The exact cause of this tragic accident, which is considered to be the worst train crash in India in over two decades, is yet to be determined. The Coromandel Express, en route from Kolkata to Chennai, experienced multiple carriages derailing in Balasore district around 19:00 local time. Subsequently, the overturned carriages were struck by the Howrah Superfast Express, traveling in the opposite direction from Yesvantpur to Howrah. The collision resulted in severe damage and deformation of the train coaches, as explained by Atul Karwal, the chief of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). A significant emergency response was mobilized, with over 200 ambulances and a large number of doctors, nurses, and rescue personnel dispatched to the scene. The state’s chief secretary, Pradeep Jena, confirmed that all trapped and injured passengers have been rescued, although the severity of their injuries is not yet known. The South Eastern Railway company of India has initiated restoration work at the crash site.
